During my internship program at this one particular company back in 2009, I have experienced many things about the organization, management, operation and everything that need to be taken in terms of making the company that everyone is working in as a good and develop company. Well, every company wants it to be that way.
While everyone is looking forward and hardly working to make the good things happen, I have noticed that there is one habit that some of the employees have and I think it’s kind of annoying and unethical. I don’t know about anyone else’s views toward this habit; or they might as well just don’t care about what is happening around the workplace. Come to the workplace during the morning, do their jobs, and then leave when the time has finished. They do not socialize at all with the mates. Well, I may say that’s too boring being them.
Back to the main point, there is one habit that we call ‘Apple Polishing’. There was one guy who used to do this ‘Apple Polishing’ habit when he needs something from someone. (From the top level management or even his friends) Sometimes, it goes like this;
“ Dear sir, you look great today! I like your necktie, it looks very exclusive. Bet it must be expensive.
Anyway here I bring you a cup of coffee that I just bought from the coffee house.”
- The Guy
“ Thanks for the compliment, and the coffee. You’re a good worker Mr. X. Let me know if you need anything.”
- The Manager
“Welcome Sir. Thanks to you too. You’re the best boss ever! Errr…. anyway can I go out for awhile? I need to pay the bill.”
- The Guy
“Alright but don’t take too much time yah.”
- The Manager
This is a kind or flattering words simply aren’t relevant to the truth of an idea or validity of a position. It is also categorized as an appeal to emotion because it appeals how a person feels about his/herself rather than his/her ability to critically analyze a claim. In critical thinking words, we call it as Ad Populum Appeal to Vanity.
In this case, it’s a lot easier for the guy to ask a permission to leave the office by doing this method.
It can be slightly considered as psychological approach where we know, human beings; they just like to be praised by others. When that takes place, the person will not think too much on interpreting simple stuff like the case above.

PLKN
My second story that I want to share is about what I did back then on year 2004. At that time, I joined the National Service (PLKN). For the first time, I mix around with new set of friends from Sabah and Sarawak. I don’t know how to get along with them. I can’t understand their accent, but they can understand my language. At that time, i am so lazy to take food from the canteen, the canteen was so far from my dorm, my friend Hidayah and I decided to asked one of our friend from Sarawak named Lily to go and take food for us. Before we asked her, we praised her with many sweet words that can make her smile. One of the things that we praised her at that time was, “You look so beautiful today, you looks like a model, You can be a supermodel one day!”. After that, she just agreed to take food from the canteen for us. therefore, me and Hidayah just relax and wait for our food to be served by our poor friend Lily. When I remembered this incident, I laugh alone. I know that what I did to her was bad, but this is one of my sweetest memories when I was in PLKN, from this incident I applied Ad Populum Appeal to Vanity to her.

Fought With My Sister
I remembered when i was in secondary school, i had a fought with my sister. My sister had accused me that i stole her money, but i did not. So, we fought and i pull her hair and she pull my hair. We can’t stop accusing each other, she accused me that i am a bad girl and that i stole her money and i also accused her for breaking my magic mirror. I said to her, “Don’t just simply accused me of something if you dont have any prove” and then she said “You did the same thing too by stealing my money!!”. Therefore,from this incident,u can see that I applied the Ad Hominem Fallacy Tu Quoque.
